After making a list of the great engineering achievements of the 20th century, the National Academy of Engineering, of the United States, has recently described a list of the grand challenges for engineering in the 21st century (of no particular order):

 编者按    2008年度的国家自然科学基金项目受理工作很快就要开始，不少基金项目申请者，尤其是刚进入研究领域的青年人，对科学基金项目申请的程序、规定和申请书怎样撰写等问题并不是很清楚。国家自然科学基金项目申请竞争越来越激烈，每年都会有不少申请惜败于非学术因素，如何清晰明确地向评审专家呈现自己的想法，避免非学术因素的失败，是项目申请者应该重视的问题。为此，《科学时报》邀请国家自然科学基金委员会工程与材料科学部车成卫（《如何提高国家自然科学基金的申请质量》一书的作者之一）撰写了本文。文章结合作者多年基金工作的经验，介绍了面上基金、青年基金和地区基金申请的有关事项。并以一些具体申请实例为基础，剖析了申请书格式设计、项目立项和论证等重要技巧。希望能对科学基金项目申请者有所帮助。

• It is in the areas of solid mechanics, mechanics of materials, or computational mechanics, and
• It has at least 1000 citations.
